As a dedicated addiction and mental health treatment center serving the San Pedro Harbor area, Coastwise Health understands the unique challenges faced by longshoremen and ILWU members. Drug addiction and substance abuse among maritime workers often develop quietly, fueled by the physical toll of the job, irregular hours, and a workplace culture that can make it difficult to ask for help. Our specialized substance abuse treatment programs are designed to support the mental health and recovery needs of maritime workers while accommodating the demanding schedules of port operations.
Working at one of the busiest ports in America comes with its own set of challenges:
These stressors contribute to higher rates of drug addiction and alcohol dependence among longshoremen and port workers. Many ILWU members turn to substances as a way to cope with pain, stress, or the emotional weight of what they experience on the job. Recognizing the signs early and seeking longshoremen drug rehab can prevent these challenges from escalating into a crisis.
For ILWU members and longshoremen who need a higher level of care without residential treatment, our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides structured, full-day substance abuse treatment five days per week. PHP is ideal for individuals dealing with severe drug addiction, co-occurring mental health disorders, or those stepping down from inpatient care. The program includes daily group therapy, individual counseling, psychiatric support, and evidence-based interventions. Because PHP runs during daytime hours, it allows participants to return home each evening, maintaining their connection to family and community in San Pedro.
Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is specifically designed for working longshoremen who need effective substance abuse treatment without stepping away from their careers. IOP meets three to five days per week for three hours per session, with day and evening options to accommodate rotating port shifts. This outpatient rehab program focuses on relapse prevention, coping skills development, group therapy, and individual counseling. For many ILWU members, IOP provides the right balance of structured drug rehab and the flexibility to continue earning a living.
