Breaking the Cycle of Addiction

Comprehensive, compassionate treatment that addresses the root causes of substance use disorder.

What Is Addiction?

Substance use disorder involves negative changes in behavior, physical health consequences from long-term drug use, and inability to stop despite consequences. Addiction is a chronic, relapsing condition that fundamentally alters how the brain functions.

Key characteristics of addiction include:

  • Tolerance — Over time, the body requires increasingly larger amounts of a substance to achieve the same effect, driving escalating use
  • Withdrawal — When substance use is reduced or stopped, the body reacts with physical and psychological symptoms that can range from uncomfortable to life-threatening
  • Brain pathway changes — Repeated substance use physically rewires the brain's reward, motivation, and memory circuits, making compulsive use increasingly automatic
  • Cravings — Intense, persistent urges to use the substance that can be triggered by stress, environmental cues, emotions, or even specific people and places

Understanding Brain Chemistry

Addiction is not a matter of willpower or moral failing — it is rooted in brain chemistry. Substances of abuse hijack the brain's dopamine system, flooding reward pathways with far more dopamine than natural activities produce. Over time, the brain adapts by reducing its own dopamine production and decreasing the number of dopamine receptors. This creates a state where the individual needs the substance just to feel normal, and natural sources of pleasure — food, relationships, hobbies — no longer provide the same satisfaction.

Tolerance develops as the brain continues to adapt, requiring more of the substance to produce the same effect. Genetic factors also play a significant role: research indicates that genetics account for approximately 40 to 60 percent of an individual's vulnerability to addiction, influencing how the brain responds to substances and how quickly dependence develops.

Addiction Is a Medical Condition

Like diabetes or heart disease, addiction is a chronic medical condition that responds to evidence-based treatment. Recovery is achievable with the right support, and seeking help is the first step.

Treatment Components

Effective addiction treatment is rarely a single intervention — it involves multiple components working together to address the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of the disease:

Detox — Medical detoxification provides safe, supervised withdrawal management. Depending on the substance, withdrawal can be dangerous, and professional oversight ensures safety and comfort during the initial phase of recovery.

Rehabilitation Programs — Structured treatment programs provide the intensive support needed in early recovery. Coastwise offers Partial Hospitalization (PHP), which provides full-day programming with the ability to return home in the evenings, and Intensive Outpatient (IOP), which offers flexible scheduling for those who need to maintain work or family responsibilities while receiving treatment.

Behavioral Therapies — Evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing help you identify triggers, develop coping skills, address co-occurring mental health conditions, and build the behavioral foundation for sustained recovery.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) — For certain substance use disorders, FDA-approved medications can reduce cravings, manage withdrawal symptoms, and stabilize brain chemistry. MAT is most effective when combined with behavioral therapies and psychosocial support.

Aftercare — Recovery does not end when formal treatment does. Our aftercare program provides ongoing support, accountability, and connection to help you maintain sobriety and continue building the life you want.

Types of Addictions Treated

At Coastwise Health, we treat a full range of substance use disorders, including:

  • Alcohol use disorder — The most prevalent substance use disorder in the United States, involving compulsive alcohol consumption despite negative consequences
  • Marijuana use disorder — Contrary to popular belief, marijuana can create dependence and withdrawal symptoms, particularly with long-term, heavy use
  • Cocaine addiction — A powerful stimulant that creates intense but short-lived euphoria, leading to binge patterns and severe psychological dependence
  • Opioid use disorder — Including prescription painkillers, heroin, and fentanyl; opioids carry an extremely high risk of physical dependence and fatal overdose
  • Benzodiazepine dependence — Medications prescribed for anxiety and insomnia that can produce severe physical dependence and dangerous withdrawal
  • Methamphetamine addiction — A highly addictive stimulant that causes significant damage to brain structure and function, as well as severe physical health consequences
